Expanding deployments of Postgres among global enterprises and ISVs helped drive record subscription sales growth

EnterpriseDB (EDB), the leading worldwide provider of enterprise-class Postgres products and Oracle database compatibility solutions, today announced a record 70 percent increase in software subscription revenue in 2013. The year capped 16 consecutive quarters of growth in subscription revenue as global enterprises continued to expand their deployments of Postgres to contain or reduce spending on more costly, traditional database vendors.

Deepening relationships with existing users, growth in new subscriptions, expanded relationships with independent software vendors and partners, and revenue growth in the cloud all played a role in EDB’s record year. EDB added more than 400 customers in 2013 and the ranks now exceed 2,400. The prevalence of larger enterprises adopting EDB proves that larger enterprises continue to expand their success with open source software in the data center to drive down costs. This is an important trend, with companies looking further up the infrastructure software stack to the database layer for opportunities to leverage open source.

EDB counts among its customers 50 of the Fortune 500 list of the largest US companies and 98 of the Forbes Global 2000 list of the largest companies in the world. EDB’s customers worldwide now include ABN AMRO Bank, Grupo BBVA, Deutsche Börse AG, Ericsson, Fujitsu, KT Corp., Lockheed Martin, McKesson Corp., Nippon Telegraph & Telephone (NTT), RSA Security and the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services.

“Revenue figures tell our story for us. We’ve had 16 consecutive quarters of growth during some tough years for the global economy,” said Ed Boyajian, CEO and President of EnterpriseDB. “EnterpriseDB is celebrating its 10th year in business this year and with that comes the proven track record, experience and expertise that global organizations recognize and value in a strategic database solution provider. That same ability to deliver won us recognition this past year from Gartner as the only relational database in the Challenger quadrant in the Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems.”

Key Contributors to EDB Growth

Expanded ISV Program

Independent software vendors (ISVs) were a key contributor to EDB’s growth during 2013 with a significant increase in activity. These companies are either working with EDB to certify the performance and compatibility of Postgres Plus Advanced Server for their products or they are embedding EDB software into their own products to increase margins and deliver more cost-effective solutions to customers. HP, for example, has certified its mission critical clustering solution HP Serviceguard for Postgres Plus Advanced Server as well as its HP Service Activator, which telecommunications companies use to create and activate new service accounts.

EDB is also currently working with ACI Worldwide, CA Technologies, Dell, Informatica, PinkRoccade, Symantec and Tata Consultancy Services.

New Partnership Milestones

EDB is a partner in the HP Intel Solution Centers and has a build for the HP-UX operating environment on Intel Itanium-based HP Integrity servers. The partnership marked a major deployment with Deutsche Börse AG, which operates the largest financial exchange in Germany. In recognition of the Deutsche Börse deployment, HP awarded EnterpriseDB with an HP AllianceOne Partner of the Year Award for Mission Critical Computing at the HP Discover event in Las Vegas in June 2013.

EDB also deepened its longtime relationship with IBM with the announcement in July 2013 that EDB’s flagship Postgres Plus Advanced Server was available on its IBM Power Systems servers running Linux, and on the new high-performance Linux-based system, the PowerLinux 7R4. The collaboration was pivotal in expanding the range of open source based alternatives.

Growth in Postgres Plus Cloud Database

Postgres Plus Cloud Database usage skyrocketed in 2013 and revenue from the product increased by 200 percent as the demand for Postgres among enterprises and governments extended to the cloud. While the cloud database expanded its ranks of customers conducting initial trials, a significant portion of existing customers reported plans to move from development to production deployment and to deploy new workloads.

Product and Technology Advances

EDB released its Postgres Plus Advanced Server 9.3 with performance enhancements that are not available in community PostgreSQL. Major performance improvements in partitioning expand the workloads that Postgres Plus Advanced Server can handle, including large datasets that require scaling to hundreds and even thousands of table partitions.

The newest version of Postgres Plus Advanced Server also expanded the solution’s capacity to support JSON data types. The new capabilities strengthened Postgres’ ability to support both unstructured and semi-structured data and as well as many applications that NoSQL technologies had been developed to support.

EDB also launched one of its most important new products in December. EDB Failover Manager fulfills a critical need among Postgres users for an automated failover solution that integrates seamlessly with the company’s flagship Postgres Plus Advanced Server as well as community PostgreSQL deployments. The product is crucial for meeting enterprise High Availability demands by monitoring the health of a streaming replication cluster and initiating failover in the event the master database fails.

Supporting Quotes

“Our customers are looking to expand their open ecosystems to support more demanding and more complex workloads. The strength and reliability of EDB’s Postgres Plus Advanced Server, combined with our Linux-based HP ProLiant and HP-UX-based Integrity offerings, provide data-driven enterprises with a powerful open solution to alternative platforms,” said Vineeth Ram, VP Product Marketing, HP Servers.

“We are always pleased to see Red Hat partners deliver powerful open source solutions to the enterprise, especially long-time members of the Red Hat ecosystem like EnterpriseDB. Red Hat and EnterpriseDB joint customers can benefit from the performance gains, cost savings and enterprise-class support provided by the partner certified and supported solution,” said Mike Werner, Sr. Director, Global Technology Programs, Red Hat.

"We've witnessed a dramatic increase in performance with Postgres Plus Advanced Server version 9.3 when inserting massive amounts of data into partitioned tables. With this new feature, we were able to easily and successfully deploy a real-time signal acquisition project that would have been a significant challenge using another technology," said Juan Alberto Cuadros, Competence Center Manager, Indra, a global technology solutions provider based in Madrid.
